New product round-up for August

We picked up three new dildos from Happy Valley this month: WildeFuze Tango, and Jet. Wilde is based on the design of Harmony, but a bit longer and thicker. The Fuze Tango is just like the double-ended Tango, only it’s made of shiny black silicone. Jet is a semi-realistic dildo with balls that comes in either blue or purple. What do these toys have in common? They’re all great for harness and partner play!

Our newest vibe is Zizo, a firm silicone G-spotter. Its sensual shape is smooth and comfortable, and its 12 vibration modes are both powerful and near-silent.

For your butt, we have the new Aneros Helix Syn. Based on the design of the super-popular Aneros Helix, the Syn is coated in silky silicone, but still retains the rigidity that makes the original such a superb prostate massager.

When you’re a young queer person, you need all the guidance you can get. That’s why we picked up Queer: The Ultimate Guide for LGBT Teens. This book discusses coming out, dating, and how to combat homophobia, along with a plethora of personal stories from the authors and lessons on queer history. If there’s a queer teen in your life, definitely pick this one up for them.

We mentioned in last month’s new product round-up that Aslan Leather does not forget about vegans, and that remains true with their slick Rubber Collar and Rubber Cuffs. Explore your kinky side with these sexy restraints featuring heavy welded rings and buckles.

Bonus! We now have a “New Arrivals” section on our site that you can check whenever you’re wondering what’s fresh. We sometimes announce new products on Facebook and Twitter throughout the month as well.

Kink, pop culture, and feminism collide

The popularity of the BDSM-laden Fifty Shades of Grey series has created a lot of buzz lately about the “mainstreaming” of BDSM and kink. Perhaps as as response to all this new and interesting dialogue, Bitch created the “Thinking Kink” series on their blog. Launched in June, the “Thinking Kink” series highlights the ways in which BDSM is portrayed in pop culture — and what these depictions mean for feminism.

The series begins with an introductory post, which explains:

I want to look at whether BDSM’s infiltration of the mainstream media is a feminist triumph, a positive move for the kink community, or just a wallet-fattener for studio execs. I want to examine how BDSM runs the risk of being hijacked to forward anti-feminist agendas, and consider if its appearance in the media serves to bolster or dismantle rape culture, or simply give us all some entertaining PVC-clad escapism . . . I’d especially like to know if it’s possible for there to be an empowered representation of women who choose to be submissive, rather than the standard tropes of women in BDSM either being victims or dominatrixes.

The subsequent post dismantles common myths about BDSM. Then the series delves into more specific territory, with a post about the portrayal of BDSM in Sex in the City and a critique of the 30 Seconds to Mars video “Hurricane.” There are less pop culture-y posts, too, like this pair on the meaning of female submission: “Does Female Submission Mean Oppression?” and the counter-argument, “No, Female Submission Doesn’t Mean Oppression.” Male submission and masculinity are addressed and analyzed, as are female dominants and switches. The series has also discussed the meaning of the word “vanilla” and the importance of safewords.

Then, of course, there is a review of Secretary, the boundary-breaking 2002 movie depicting the blossoming of a D/s relationship (pictured).

Throughout the posts, there are abundant quotes from many great authors and bloggers, like Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy (authors of the The New Topping Book and The New Bottoming Book), Jay Wiseman (author of SM 101), Midori (author of Wild Side Sex: The Book of Kink), Cliff PervocracyClarisse Thorn, and Mollena Williams.

Follow the series (which is still ongoing) using Bitch‘s Sex and Sexuality category.

Rough Sex For Everyone: Consent and Desire

Thursday, May 24th — 7:30 p.m. — $20

The sweet intersection of a slap and a kiss. The rough and tumble of a spank and caress, of a commanding voice and a gentle stroke, of a laugh and a growl.

Does this sound like you? Or do you wish it could?

Come join hugely popular sex and BDSM educator Felice Shays as she teaches you to use your hands, mouth, toys, and imagination to delve deep into what is often taboo and always crazy hot. Felice will address what it is to take and give power, and how we can lose society’s prescriptions as we cross the bedroom threshold.

Throughout the workshop, with levity and straight talk, Felice will share provocative techniques on how to find and express your own desire, how to push through fears that might be preventing you from discovering new sexual and sensual highs, and of course, how to spank, slap, restrain, and more. We will explore communication, emotional limits and release, safety, partnered positions, head space, anatomy, dirty talk, and helpful items.

All genders, sexual proclivities, singles, couples, and other relationship configurations welcome. Bring your questions and your curiosity.

Known for her straight talk infused with humor, Felice Shays provides personal sexual and BDSM education across the US and Canada. Felice provides sex and BDSM counseling to individuals and couples, and has presented at a plethora of events, groups, and private functions for a decade. Locally-made goodies available at She Bop!

Doesn’t buying stuff locally just warm the cockles of your heart? We agree — it feels really good to support local businesses. That’s why we’ve made it a priority to stock locally-made products and team up with Oregon artists for specialty items. We recently added a local section to our online shop, but here’s a more in-depth run-down of all the Beaver State goodies we carry! From floggers fashioned out of old tires to organic lube and handmade toy bags, this stuff is very Portland — just how we like it.

We are lucky to have several sex product manufacturers based in Oregon. Good Clean Love, the company behind organic Almost Naked lube, is based in Eugene. Empire Labs, who you might know as “the place that makes those Clone-a-Willy/Pussy thingies,” is in Portland. Local company Seagrape supplies us with delicious-smelling body products. GladRags, purveyors of adorable menstrual accessories such as cloth pads and the Moon Cup, calls Portland home. And Gothfox Designs, the company that brings us stunningly beautiful, hand-sewn pasties, resides just across the Columbia river from us, in Vancouver, Washington.

It can be hard to find proper storage for your sex toys sometimes, so we asked local brand Appetite to make some of their gorgeous, nature-inspired bags especially for us. Appetite padded bags and travel bags come in several sizes and are hand screen-printed. Appetite strives to use end-run, organic, and scrap material whenever possible. We only feature a few fabric choices online, but we’re constantly acquiring different fabrics in the shop.

Some items we carry in the shop are a little too varied to offer in our web store. Like the porcelain dildos from Porcelain Pleasures, which are all one-of-a-kind pieces. Crafted out of a milky white porcelain and sealed with a non-porous glaze, these dildos look and feel amazing. Then there’s the much-loved Naughty Autie’s Aprons, made for us by a local designer. We also stock an array of Courtesy Pads — sex blankets for keeping the sheets dry.

Portland has no shortage of kinksters, and we’re thrilled to carry some of their hand-crafted wares! In Her Tube is a Portland company that constructs floggers and harnesses out of recycled rubber tires. Can it get any more Portland than that?! Our rattan canes and hankies are also handmade in the City of Roses. Shiny Shiny, a company run by a pair of crafty and kinky Portlanders, supply us with hand-conditioned, organic hemp rope, in our signature plum color. We also stock Twisted Monk rope, which is from Seattle.

Of course, as home to famed book maze store Powell’s, Portland has produced tons of fantastic writers, and we’re honored to carry several books written by and featuring them. Wild Feminine, The Chronology of WaterOh Joy Sex ToySex from Scratch, and My Erotic Adventure were all written by local women, and the work of Portland-based author Shanna Germain is featured in quite a few anthologies we stock, such as Women in Lust and Please, Sir.

Our She Bop swag is furnished by local businesses as well! Our T-shirts and undies are produced by Printed Matter; our stickers are made by Diesel Fuel Prints; and our business cards are printed by Phoenix Media. In fact, Phoenix Media is responsible for those beautiful, enlarged sex toy photos decorating the shop’s walls.

When you visit our shop’s check-out station, you may sometimes notice little boxes of chocolates beckoning to you. Those are handmade by Neapolitan Chocolate & Co., and come in some irresistible flavors such as lavendar + smoked salt and rose + raspberry. Neapolitan Chocolate & Co. have even made us boobie-shaped chocolates and chocolates with our logo on them!

Behind the scenes, we utilize local service providers in the running of She Bop: our phone company and our credit card processing company are both Portland businesses. And when you purchase something in our shop, you’ll take it home in a 100% recycled, hand-stamped paper bag from Portland Store Fixtures. Portland Store Fixtures also supplies us with tissue paper, display stands, and other doodads around the shop.

As time goes on, we plan to stock more fun and unique items from local artisans and authors. We’re thankful we live in such a great city filled with so many talented and crafty people!

She Bop’s Picks: Valentine’s Day

Is it any surprise we’re big fans of Valentine’s Day? Of course, we believe in love and pleasure all year round, but it’s nice to have a day set aside for celebrating in style. In fact, Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to scout out something new for your bedroom adventures. Here are our recommendations for sexy items to make this Valentine’s Day memorable (and pleasurable!). Check out last year’s picks for even more ideas.

Tenga Lover’s Egg

The ridiculously cute Tenga Lover’s Egg is a limited edition version of the very popular Tenga Egg. Tenga Eggs are self-contained, stretchy pleasure sleeves that each come with a pouch of lube. This sleeve has a special heart inner texture unlike any other egg before it, and a heart-patterned casing to match. There’s a sense of playfulness and spontaneity about Tenga Eggs, making them perfect for solo or partner play.

We-Vibe Touch

The We-Vibe Touch clitoral vibe is many things: made of 100% silicone, rechargeable, waterproof, magenta-colored (although it also comes in teal)… but above all, it delivers deep, rumbly vibrations that will surprise and delight whoever uses it. It also has a unique shape — a lightly-pointed tip and an indented scoop on the underside — that will satisfy those who enjoy pinpoint stimulation and those who prefer wider pressure.

I Dare You: 30 Sealed Seductions

This seductive product, created by sex guru Susie Bright, urges you to have some mischievous fun with your partner. Open the elegant box, select a sealed envelope at random, and open it. The card inside will reveal your next course of action — a sexy dare or prompt — that can bring you and your partner even closer.

Gossip Ring

A finger vibe that looks like a rose — how much cuter can you get? Well, how about a finger vibe that also doubles as a cock ring, and still looks like a rose? The Gossip Ring is all of that and more! Made of phthalate-free TPR, the Gossip Ring is also waterproof.

Pink and White Silicone Ball Gag

If you like to get rough with your lover, we haven’t forgotten you! This impeccably-constructed, candy-colored ball gag from Aslan Leather may look sweet and innocent, but it’s really a heavy-duty bondage implement. The leather strap features a snap-out safety design with a sturdy buckle closure, and the ball is 100% silicone, ensuring that it is entirely flavorless.

Love is Art

Everyone hopes to to have a memorable Valentine’s Day, but with the Love is Art kit, you’ll definitely never forget — because the proof will be on your wall! That’s right: this kit includes everything you need to create a permanent piece of artwork from you and your partners’ body movements. Pour the non-toxic, washable black paint on the large white cotton canvas, then let your bodies do the painting. This kit leaves no stone unturned: it also comes with a big plastic sheet, two pairs of disposable slippers, and a body scrubber for the shower.

Kissing: A Field Guide

Kissing: A Field Guide

An entire book on kissing? Oh yes! There is much to be learned about the art of kissing, and Violet Blue tackles the subject with honesty and sass, not to mention tons and tons of tips, from the overarching (how to hint at a kiss with your body language) to the smallest of details (how to keep lipstick from smudging). No matter how much kissing you’ve done, you’ll learn something new and be inspired to put your knowledge into practice.

Double Heart Slapper

Making a lasting impression on your lover with this heart-patterned paddle. This sturdy, double-layered slapper is split down the center, creating a magnificent slapping sound and feel. Perfect for a light bit of fun — or to ensure that your playmate will feel the aftermath of Valentine’s Day on February 15th.

Double Decker Love Ring

There is probably no cock ring in existence that has more Valentine’s Day spirit than the Double Decker Love Ring. Bright red and adorned with raised hearts, the Double Decker has two powerful bullets for stimulation of both partners at once. The bullets each have three speeds and can be controlled independently. The ring is stretchy and comfortable for maximum satisfaction.

ON Clitoral Arousal Balm

Need to jump-start the sexy times, or give yourself or your partner something to squirm about during dinner? With its lipstick-like presentation, ON Clitoral Arousal Balm is easy to apply, and you’ll start to feel the effects immediately. This balm creates a warming and tingling sensation that you won’t be able to ignore. ON is a natural product, with ingredients such as cinnamon bark extract and white beeswax. It is glycerin-, paraben-, and menthol-free.

Gothfox pasties

Keep the Valentine’s Day spirit going year-round with these incredible handmade pasties from Gothfox. The Couture Valentine Rhinestone Pasties are literally covered in rhinestones — approximately 140 rhinestones per pastie, depending on size! — and feature bright red tassels for epic twirling. The Couture Rose Pasties resemble a beautiful bouquet of red satin roses. Gothfox pasties are made with a soft rayon and cotton backing, and cupped to contour with the breast’s natural curve. They’re made to last a lifetime.

Simply Blown G-Glass

There’s just something alluring about glass sex toys, and Simply Blown’s G-Glass is a stunning example of that, with its contrast of clear and colored glass. This piece has a gentle curve and a rounded handle, so both ends can be used for sensual G-spot stimulation, and the frictionless feeling of glass only adds to the pleasure. Of course, we recommend red for Valentine’s Day, but purple is nice too.

Hot Sex: Over 200 Things You Can Try Tonight!

This book is described as “hip” and “contemporary,” so we’re pretty sure that it’s perfect for Portlanders! Hot Sex: Over 200 Things You Can Try Tonight! is an in-depth guide to having awesome sex. It’s fresh, comprehensive, and bursting with ideas for igniting passion and having fun.

X-Rated Candies

Do you or your partner have a sweet tooth — and a somewhat profane sense of humor? Then you’ll definitely like X-Rated Valentine Hearts and the I Fucking Love You Candy Heart Box. Both contain candy hearts that look exactly like regular conversation hearts from afar, but once you read their messages, you’ll notice the difference.

New product round-up for December

Books, books books — many books hit our shelves this past month! Such as Joan Price’s Naked at Our Age: Talking Out Loud About Senior Sex, a priceless resource for older folks who want to nurture their sexual selves.

There’s a lot of new erotica to be had! Best Lesbian Erotica 2012 just came out, as did the sultry Women in Lust. And for the bondage aficionados, there’s a specialized D/s collection: She’s On Top: Erotic Stories of Female Dominance and Male Submission.

If you’re into burlesque, pin-ups, or graphic novels, we have a few new books that might interest you. First is The Burlesque Handbook, a guide to the art of performing burlesque. Then we have Gil Elvgren: All His Glamorous American Pin-Ups, a collection of post-Depression era paintings.

We picked up one new vibrator this month: luxury company Je Joue’s newest offering, a rechargeable G-spot vibrator named Uma. We actually sold out of this toy within 2 days, so we’re waiting for more to come in.

Comstock Films’ newest movie has arrived! Brett and Melanie: Boi Meets Girl is the seventh film in Comstock Films’ erotic documentary series. Like all of Comstock’s films, the movie begins with an interview with the couple, and ends with footage of their lovemaking. This particular film is notable for its examination of strength and vulnerability in the context of gender interpretation.

An important question for bakers everywhere: why make your cookies circular when you can make them penis-shaped? These cookie cutters are perfect for bachelorette parties — or, really, anytime you’re feeling sassy.

She Bop’s Picks: Gifts and Stocking Stuffers

If you’re currently pondering what to get your significant other this holiday season, we have you covered! Here are our top picks for sexy holiday gift-giving and stocking-stuffing. Visit us in person or peruse our online store to snatch these up. Also check out last year’s picks for even more ideas!

LELO Lyla

We’re always excited to see what luxury sex toy manufacturer LELO will come out with next, and their latest line of wireless, rechargeable, SenseMotion toys is couples-oriented and really fun! Lyla is an insertable egg vibrator that is controlled by the movement of its remote. So, for instance, you can tilt the remote to increase the vibration strength. The best part is that the remote also vibrates — mirroring the vibrations in the egg — so the person holding the remote knows what their partner is feeling. Lyla comes packaged in a luxurious LELO gift box.

Nitrile cock ring set

If you’ve been thinking about trying cock rings but aren’t quite sure where to start, the Nitrile cock ring set is a great introduction! These 100% skin-safe nitrile rings come in a pack of three different sizes (1.25″, 1.5″, and 2″), so you can experiment and find the perfect fit. This set is compatible with both silicone and water-based lubricants.

Lube sampler pack

How can you resist this cuteness? We know that sometimes it’s hard to choose just one lube, so we’ve put together a lube sampler pack that comes in a festive gift bag! Each bag is $9 and includes one sample each of these lubes:

For an extra $8, we’ll throw in a Power Bullet in the color of your choice!

Slimline G

This one’s for the G-spot explorer on your list! The Slimline G is a delightfully inexpensive plastic vibrator with a slim body and a bulbous head — the perfect shape for pinpoint G-spot stimulation. Strong, multi-speed vibrations add some extra oomph. The Slimline G can be used clitorally as well, and its length is ideal for reaching the clit during a variety of positions.

Jimmyjane Afterglow Candle, Gingersnap

This candle will get you into the holiday spirit and the sexy spirit at the same time. Jimmyjane’s Afterglow Candles are known for smelling absolutely amazing, but that’s not all — the wax doubles as a massage oil! The rim of the candle is shaped perfectly for pouring the warm oil onto the skin. One gingersnap massage, coming right up!

The Cookie Sutra, Adult Mad Libs, and Sextrology

It was hard for us to choose just a few book-type items to recommend, but we narrowed it down to three. The Cookie Sutra is full of photographs of gingerbread cookies going at it — what else do you need to know? Adult Mad Libs are always a riot, and there’s even a festive “Santa Baby” version for your fill-in-the-blank amusement. Sextrology features entertaining examinations of the zodiac’s 24 gender signs; the authors even compare the compatibility of specific couplings. How fun!

Flexi Felix

Flexi Felix is a superb set of 100% silicone anal beads which are a ton of fun all on their own. But look at that face! Can’t you imagine this little fellow peeking out of a stocking? And the look on your partner’s face as the beads are revealed one by one? It would be an adorable sign of things to come.

Olivia’s Lucky Ladies Playing Cards

If you know any card game fiends, we recommend this sexy deck of official regulation-size playing cards. These cards feature 52 different paintings of the irreplaceable Bettie Page. Feast your eyes on Bettie Page posing in a variety of alluring outfits and positions… then, try to get your head back in the game!

Silky Tie-Ups

The possibilities are endless with this luxurious yet affordable pair of 5-foot, 100% polyester sashes. Tie one around your lover’s head to blindfold them — or slide one end into the loop around wrists or ankles, and pull. The soft, sensual material is sure to send a message of love — and restraint.

MiMi

Resembling a flower petal or smooth pebble, the Je Joue MiMi is one of our favorite new clitoral vibes this year. This rechargeable, fully waterproof silicone toy has five levels of intense vibration, followed by five fun vibration patterns. And wrapping paper is hardly necessary with this toy, as it comes in a sleek black gift box tied shut with a ribbon.

Candy, but not just any candy

If your partner likes to find candy in their stocking, we have some suggestions for you to toss in alongside the chocolate kisses. Gummy boobs, perhaps? Or maybe a candy G-string, nipple tassels, love ring, cuffs, necklace, or posing pouch? Go with whatever suits their personality best, or whatever will be the most fun to eat off them.

Little Box of Smut Word Magnets

These little tins would slip into a stocking perfectly! When unboxed, the magnetic words will help you decorate your refrigerator with naughty sentences. Don’t worry if you’re not feeling particularly smutty — there are other word magnet boxes with different themes: Love, Obscenities, and Passion.

Bcute Pearl

The Bcute lives up to its name — it is a cute, petite vibrator that also happens to be quite versatile. At 3″ insertable length, the Bcute is small enough to be used for clitoral stimulation, or it can be inserted to take advantage of its undulating shape. The Bcute is also waterproof!

Batteries and condoms

Still need to fill some space in that stocking you’re stuffing? Throw in some condoms (we suggest One condoms for their colorful and unique packaging) or batteries. Our favorite batteries are the funky, one-of-a-kind Dead Batteries, which can be found in AA, AAA, and button cell varieties. They’ll surely be put to good use, and besides, they’ll look great among the candy.

New product round-up for November

A wide variety of new books have hit our shelves this month. Chester 5000-XYV is a quirky, steampunk-inspired erotic comic that chronicles the love between human and machine. Then we have an instructional guide, Intimacy & Desire: Awaken the Passion in Your Relationship, written by a marriage and family therapist. A local Portland author, Lidia Yuknavitch, has written a powerful memoir called The Chronology of Water that we’re proud to carry.

We’ve picked up a bunch of new sex toys! First, the We-Vibe 3, an updated version of the insanely popular We-Vibe couples’ vibrator. Now it comes with a remote, for streamlined control of the toy no matter which position you happen to be in!

We also have Pop Tops, silicone sleeves that make the head of your Hitachi easier to clean and/or more textured. For the butt, we have an artsy prostate plug, the Aneros Progasm Ice. We also picked up a sleek glass G-spot dildo from Simply Blown.

From our friends at Aslan Leather, look at the gorgeous new Crystal Blue Jaguar! This harness, in Aslan’s signature low-rise Jaguar style, comes in a beautiful powder blue leather with white accents. We also now carry the Minx Upgrade, which can transform the back of any Jaguar harness into a corset.

One new DVD is gracing our catalog this month, and it’s a great one: Courtney Trouble’s new release, Live Sex ShowIf you like being a voyeur — and watching others engage in voyeurism — you should definitely check this one out. Plus, it unabashedly shows fisting.

This one may be a small addition, but if you have a latex allergy or sensitivity, it’s an important one: the Skyn Large condoms from Lifestyles are made of polyisoprene, a non-latex material, and come in a bigger size than other non-latex offerings.

For those with a kinky bent (or an adventurous spirit), we have two new ways to tie someone up: Silky Tie-Ups and Silk Binding Sashes. Take things even further with the delightfully unique Love is Art kit, which includes everything you need to create a truly one-of-a-kind painting. Pour the non-toxic, washable black paint onto the included white cotton canvas, then… let your bodies make love and art.

Or perhaps you’d like a different sort of craft project? In that case, pick up a jet black Clone-a-Willy kit and make a black, vibrating replica of your favorite penis today!
