New Horizons in Kink & Polyamory: An Evening with Authors Kevin Patterson & Dr. Liz Powell

Kevin Patterson and Dr. Liz Powell

Monday, December 16th — 7: 30 pm — $10-25 (sliding scale)

Are you looking for some new takes on non-monogamy? What about more progressive ways of approaching kink? Have you read “that book” on polyamory or BDSM, but want some new perspectives?

Authors, polyamorists, and educators Dr. Liz Powell and Kevin Patterson, MEd are here to expand your reading list and your horizons! Far beyond your typical take on how to practice BDSM or polyamory, Kevin and Dr. Liz each have books and ways of thinking about relationships that can help you build your toolkit and unlearn societal patterns that keep you from enjoying the love and pleasure you’ve been seeking.

How? Well, Dr. Liz, author of Building Open Relationships: Your hands-on guide to swinging, polyamory, and beyond!, will share worksheets from their book, as well as stories of their own mistakes, to help you fine tune your non-monogamy and kinky negotiation skills. Kevin Patterson, author of Love’s Not Colorblind, will read from his seminal work on race and representation in polyamorous and other alternative communities. Both authors will stick around for a Q&A, during which they’ll offer advice and their own thoughts on your questions. In addition, they’ll be signing books, so you can get your own personalized copy of their groundbreaking works!

Dr. Liz believes that great sex can change the world. They are on a mission to help you have more meaningful, pleasurable relationships in life and work, as well as the bedroom. They’re a coach and licensed psychologist (CA 27871, OR 3068) helping couples and singles develop self-confidence and authenticity in their relationships, whether conventional or non-traditional. As a sex educator, Dr. Liz has spoken on many stages internationally including the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists Annual Conference, the Guelph Sexuality Conference, and the Woodhull Sexual Freedom Summit. Learn more about Dr. Liz at DrLizPowell.com, Sex-Positive Psych on YouTube and Facebook, and @sexpospsych on Twitter.

Kevin Patterson is an active member of the Philadelphia polyamory community. He’s been practicing ethical nonmonogamy since August of 2002 after opening up a relationship that eventually became his marriage. In April of 2015, Kevin was inspired to start Poly Role Models, an interview series for people describing their experiences with polyamory. It is currently the most diverse and inclusive platform for polyamory available. To continue the discussion of polyamorous representation, Kevin has extended the blog’s work into nationwide speaking engagements about how race and polyamory intersect. This has led to the writing of the book, Love’s Not Color Blind: Race and Representation in Polyamorous and Other Alternative Communities. Along with co-writer Alana Phelan, Kevin launched a sci-fi novel series, For Hire. The series centers characters of color and as well as other marginalized identities.
