What We Bop: Silicone

Silicone sex toys!Gianni, Form 4, Bendybeads, Smartballs Teneo Duo, Tex, Tristan, Big Boss, Ina 2

The majority of sex toys we carry are made of pure silicone, so it’s no surprise we have a special place in our hearts for it. It’s an extremely versatile material, and because it can be soft, silicone is ideal for anal beadsdouble-ended dildospackers, and any time a more yielding material is desired. Gotta love that!

Solid silicone toys (like dildos) are made by pouring liquid silicone into a mold, letting it set, prying it out of the mold (beware the suction!), and trimming the excess silicone bits. Other toys, like vibrators, are coated in silicone. But the really important part comes before the production line, when a company decides to use 100% medical-grade silicone — the purest of the pure — rather than settling for a cheaper and less body-safe material.

Speaking of cheap materials, watch out for mislabeled toys at shops that don’t carefully curate their selection. The sex toy industry is unregulated, and any manufacturer can slap the words “100% silicone” or “phthalate-free” on their packaging without ever having to prove such a claim. That’s why it’s so important to shop from a place like us that carries only body-safe toys.

We previously highlighted glass and why it rocks as a sex toy material, and now it’s time to discuss pure silicone.  Here are our top reasons for loving silicone sex toys!

Silicone is the only soft sex toy material that is totally non-porous. Unfortunately, a lot of toxic toys are still being produced, many containing phthalates (we don’t carry any of them). Unsafe materials like jelly can degrade, melt, off-gas, harbor bacteria, and even cause allergic reactions. Silicone, which is phthalate-free and non-porous, will do nothing of the sort. If you want a body-safe sex toy with some squish to it, silicone is the material you want.

Tons of toys are made out of it. Really, practically any type of toy! A plethora of dildosvibratorsanal toysprostate toyskegel exercisors, vibrator attachmentsball gagsSTP devices, and even the Moon Cup are made of silicone. So if you’re on the hunt for a silicone toy, the selection is vast — more vast than with any other body-safe material.

It comes in many formulations. Unlike other materials which tend to have the same texture and rigidity across the board (sorry, stainless steel, we know you can’t help it!), silicone varies quite a bit from company to company. Luxury vibrator manufacturers such as LELO, Jimmyjane, and Je Joue use silicone that is silky and firm to the touch, while Fun Factory vibrators have more cushion and a more matte texture.

Dildo makers vary in their silicone formulations as well. Vixen Creations‘ dildos are the squishiest, while Tantus and Happy Valley dildos have less give. Some silicone toys, like the Harmony and Silk, have a highly glossy sheen that makes for super smooth insertion and thrusting. Matte toys, like the Share, create more friction and drag.

Additionally, a couple companies make dual-density silicone: Tantus’ O2 and Vixen Creations’ VixSkin. These toys are characterized by a softer outer layer and a hard inner core (two different formulations of silicone), giving them stability coupled with a plush feel. These are some of the most realistic toys out there.

Silicone toys are colorful! What’s your favorite color? There’s likely a silicone sex toy out there for you (yes, even if your answer was “atomic orange” or “bright yellow“). Fun Factory in particular is known for its adventurous and whimsical color choices. Vixen Creations has several skin tones, as well as neon options. But silicone isn’t limited to solid colors. Vamp and Happy Valley toys, for instance, are swirled.

Silicone is odorless and flavorless. While not an asset particular to silicone, this comes into play with silicone because it’s the most likely material to be getting up close and personal with a mouth and nose. In effect, giving a blowjob to a silicone strap-on will not leave you with a rubbery taste in your mouth or a rancid smell lingering in your nostrils (toxic toys, on the other hand, will). That’s why the silicone ball gag works so well!

You can clean them a multitude of ways. Medical-grade silicone can withstand very high temperatures. So, just like a pure silicone baking pan, a silicone toy (with no mechanical parts) can be put in the dishwasher or even just boiled for 5-10 minutes to sterilize. A hand wash with warm water and antibacterial soap works too, or you can use a 10% bleach, 90% water solution. Whichever works for you!

Silicone toys and harnesses go together like PB&J. The majority of harnesscompatible dildos are made of silicone, since other body-safe materials tend to be very stiff and not exactly easy to wield in a harness. So, if you’re looking for a dildo to use during strap-on play, you’ll likely be in the market for a silicone one. Just make sure the dildo will fit comfortably through the O-ring in your harness of choice!

Have any more questions about silicone sex toys? Let us know! And as always, come down to the shop to squeeze and caress our silicone toys to feel the differences for yourself.

Up until now, there was a cupcake-shaped hole in the sex toy industry. Now it has been filled with a vibrator that really looks good enough to eat! The silicone and ABS plastic Cupcake is true to the size of your average cupcake, but equipped with a discreet button on the bottom that takes you through two speeds and three pulsation patterns. It even comes in an adorable retro tin, perfect for gift-giving and future storage!

Jimmyjane Hello Touch

Jimmyjane Hello Touch
The future is here — our hands and sex toys are colliding! There have been various finger vibes before, but the Hello Touch takes things to a new level with two silicone pods that attach to your fingertips and blend seamlessly into your play. Try them on the nipples, clitoris, penis — anywhere that you’d normally stroke or squeeze. Great for folks who want to add that extra buzz to manual stimulation. Plus, the whole thing is waterproof!

Tenga Lover’s Egg

The ridiculously cute Tenga Lover’s Egg is a special edition version of the very popular Tenga Egg. Tenga Eggs are self-contained, stretchy pleasure sleeves that each come with a pouch of lube. This sleeve has a special heart inner texture unlike any other egg before it, and a heart-patterned casing to match. There’s a sense of playfulness and spontaneity about Tenga Eggs, making them perfect for solo or partner play.

Spareparts Hardwear Sasha harness

Spareparts Hardwear Sasha Harness
An underwear-style harness with some added flair, Sasha comes in black or red and is decorated with several bows, ruching on the backside, and removable garters. Made of nylon and spandex, this harness is as comfortable as it is sexy — and it’s machine-washable. The stretchy O-ring can accommodate a variety of dildos, and two little pockets on the inside of the undies can hold bullet vibes for added stimulation to the wearer. Ooh la la!

Rocks Off Luv Your Body Massager

Rocks Off Luv Your Body Massager
Aside from its cute heart-shaped tip, the Luv Your Body Massager is a wonderfully ergonomic vibe with many talents. It’s great for adding some extra reach during sex or masturbation, or it can be used to massage tense muscles throughout your body (without twisting yourself into a pretzel to do so!). It’s even waterproof, so a relaxing bath is another option for fun. The Luv Your Body Massager has five speeds and… did we mention it’s heart-shaped?

2013 erotica collection

2013 erotica
Whatever type of erotica strikes your (or your partner’s) fancy, these are the best that of the year: Best Erotic Romance 2013Best Lesbian Erotica 2013, and Best Women’s Erotica 2013. The caliber of the authors in these volumes is so high, you’ll be sure to find stories that are both impeccably-written and incredibly steamy. Of course, we have tons of other erotica collections if you want, for instance, oral sex stories or stories of female submission.

Incoqnito Leather Handcuffs

Incoqnito Leather Handcuffs
Known for making discreet toys that masquerade as innocuous items, Incoqnito has struck once again with their Leather Handcuffs. Wear these cuffs on one wrist and they’ll appear to be nothing more than a stylish set of leather bracelets; but they convert easily when you’d rather use them for a more scandalous purpose. Wherever you wear them out, you’re bound to spend your time anticipating what will come later.

Aneros Evi

Aneros Evi
There’s nothing else quite like the recently-released Evi. It’s a kegel toy, but that’s not all — it also stimulates the G-spot and clitoris during use. As the wearer clenches their PC muscles around Evi, the toy rocks forward and back, pressing into the clitoris and stroking the G-spot. Kegel exercises are beneficial in several ways, since toned PC muscles can lead to stronger orgasms, enhanced bladder control, and improved pregnancy. It’s the gift that keeps on giving, really.

Sliquid Organics Massage Oil

Sliquid Organics Massage Oil
We were pretty excited when one of our favorite lube companies, Sliquid, came out with a massage oil. These oils come in four varieties — including an unscented version! — each meant to impart certain characteristics when used (such as vitality, tranquility, and sensuality). They’re made with a handful of naturally occurring nut and seed oils and organic botanicals. Pair the oil with a massage stone, massage deck (see below!), or massage DVD to jumpstart your massage skills.

Sexy card decks!

Sexy card decks!
Sex-themed card decks are a quick and easy way to turn up the heat and get some new ideas. We carry several different types: Light My Fire: Sexy Requests is a pack of multiple-choice invitations; The Gay Sex Deck has tips, tricks, and positions for gay men; The Fantasy Sex Deck features erotic roleplaying ideas; and the Erotic Massage Deck is chock full of massage techniques, both ancient and modern.

Je Joue Mio

Je Joue Mio
Cock rings are an excellent addition to penetrative sex of any sort, and the Mio is a luxurious choice. Only a few cock rings on the market are rechargeable, and Mio is one of them. It is also made of 100% silicone and features 7 vibration patterns with 5 power levels each. Stretch it onto a penis or dildo to provide clitoral, scrotal, or perineum stimulation, depending on positioning and the parties involved!

Fun Factory New Wave

Fun Factory New Wave
We bet you’ve never seen a sex toy quite like this one! But that’s precisely what makes the New Wave such a versatile double-ended dildo. Made of 100% silicone and super easy to clean, it is made to be shared. The “middle wave” adds extra external stimulation for each partner. Now the question is, who gets the textured end and who wants the smoother end?

X-Rated Candies

Do you or your partner have a sweet tooth — and a somewhat profane sense of humor? Then you’ll definitely like X-Rated Valentine Hearts and the I Fucking Love You Candy Heart Box. Both contain candy hearts that look exactly like regular conversation hearts from afar, but once you read their messages, you’ll notice the difference. We love them!

How to choose your first vibrator

PicoBong AkoSo you want to buy your first vibrator — or replace a crappy old one. It seems like a daunting task, we know! And there are certainly a ton of options out there. But it’s not as difficult as it seems, and believe us, it can be fun and exciting once you’ve been pointed in the right direction. That is what we’re going to do here!

When choosing your first vibe, a lot depends on which part of your body you want to stimulate. Do you want clitoral stimulation only? Penetration only? Or do you want an insertable toy that can double as a clitoral vibe? Perhaps you want a dual stimulator, like a rabbit, for simultaneous penetration and clitoral stimulation? Making a decision on this front will narrow the field right off the bat!

BambooUnderstanding which types of stimulation you prefer can be helpful as well. Do you like direct and pinpoint stimulation, more widespread stimulation, or the option for either? Pressure or a light touch? Are you pretty sensitive, or do you crave a lot of stimulation at once? It’s okay if you’re not sure about these questions, as some vibes have a whole range of vibration intensities and options that won’t lock you into just one way of using them. Besides, you’ll learn more about what you like once you find a good toy to experiment with.

Some shops still carry toys made of questionable and potentially unsafe materials — but not us. By shopping with us, you’ll know that whatever toy you choose will be body-safe and phthalate-free. Without all the mystery meat materials clogging up our inventory, there are two non-porous vibrator materials to choose between: plastic and silicone. Plastic is hard and smooth; it transmits vibrations very well and provides excellent pressure if you want it. Silicone is a softer, more plush material. However, different manufacturers utilize silicone in different ways. Fun Factory toys, for instance, are some of the more squishy, whereas silicone-coated toys from LELO, PicoBong, and Jimmyjane are velevety but tend to be quite rigid.

We-Vibe TouchYour budget will probably come into play early on in your search for the right vibe. In general, battery-operated toys are cheaper than rechargeable ones, but they also require you to purchase batteries often. If you’ve already experienced the untimely death of a cheap toy, it may reassure you to know that many rechargeable vibes come with warranties. We also carry a few vibes that plug into the wall, and those range in price from $60 to $199.

While not always true, the type and number of batteries that a vibrator uses can be indicative of its vibration strength. A vibe that uses watch batteries, for instance, is not going to have the kind of power as a vibe that takes C batteries. If you’re able to visit us in person, you can pick up each vibe and feel its power for yourself.

Almost all vibrators can be used for clitoral stimulation, so if that’s what you’re after, there is a lot of range in terms of size, shape, and power source. There’s everything from the 2-inch Power Bullet to the foot-long Magic Wand Rechargeable. Obviously, some of these are more discreet than others! If you’re looking for a vibe that can blend into its surroundings, check out the Lipstick Vibe or LELO Mia 2 (USB rechargeable and can pass as a jump drive).

Bnaughty Vibrating BulletMini vibes are a popular choice for beginners because they are small, discreet, and easy to hold. Corded bullets like Silver BulletBnaughty, and Silk Touch Egg are especially simple to operate, as you control vibrations using the power pack. (Plus, you can quickly and cheaply spruce up your bullet or pocket rocket by grabbing a sleeve: the Rabbit Sleeve, Dandelion Sleeve, or Pixie Sleeve.) A good, dependable mid-range mini vibe is the PicoBong Ako. Some great rechargeable mini vibes are the LELO Siri 2, Jimmyjane Form 2We-Vibe TouchLELO Mia 2, and Minna Limon.

Some toys are exceptional at enhancing certain masturbation techniques. For instance, if you like rubbing your clitoris with your finger, there are vibes that can add buzz to your usual routine. The Dame Fin and Play With Me Finger Vibe actually strap to your fingers, while the Jimmyjane Form 3 has a thin, vibrating silicone membrane that your finger can control. Do you often masturbate to music? Well, the OhMiBod Club Vibe 3.OH lets you feel the music!

Sqweel 2If you know what kind of sensation you enjoy against your clitoris, there are some unique vibes to consider. If you like flickering, look at the Sqweel 2 or Sqweel Go. If you prefer a gentle back and forth, try the Eroscillator. If you like suction, consider the Womanizer. If you want your clit to be surrounded on both sides, the Jimmyjane Form 2 and Duet Flex can do that.

One special category of vibrators is wands. These powerful clitoral toys are characterized by their shape, which was originally meant to help relieve back and neck pain. Today, they are used for pleasure as well, they vary in size tremendously, and they have different power sources. Some, like the Hitachi and Bodywand, have large heads and strong vibrations that provide deep, penetrating stimulation on a large surface area, which some people love. Others, like the Mystic Wand and Shibari Mini Halo, are smaller but just as powerful. One perk about wands is that many can accommodate attachments, turning them from solely clitoral vibes into insertable and dual stimulation ones.

On the other hand, if you’re very sensitive or you’ve previously tried a strong toy and didn’t enjoy it, we carry vibes with softer, milder vibrations, such as the Bcute Pearl, Pop Vibe, and Rain. You’ll find that many rechargeable toys, especially those from LELO, start off on a pleasingly low first level, which can be increased if needed.

LELO Mona 2If you’ve never had an orgasm, you’ll probably want a toy with a large range of vibration strengths so you can play around and discover exactly which level you like. The PicoBong Ako, OhMiBod Lovelife Cuddle, and LELO Mona 2 are perfect for this purpose.

A lot of vibes with long shafts can be used both internally and externally. These toys are awesome options for a beginner, as they allow for the most amount of experimentation. The Easy GliderZizo, and G Slim Satin Touch are a few versatile battery-powered vibes. In the rechargeable category, there are vibes like the LELO Liv 2 and OhMiBod Lovelife Cuddle. When considering insertable toys, always keep size in mind. You don’t want to end up with something bigger than you can handle! So measure whatever you generally use for insertion — both girth and length — and use that as a guide.

On the hunt for a vibe you can use during sex? You’ll want one that’s small or thin enough to fit between two bodies. Vibes with longer shafts are actually good for this purpose, as they can reduce the strain on your hand and fingers. Or you could try the couples-oriented We-Vibe Sync.

If your main concern is exploring your G-spot, then you’ll want a vibe with a pronounced and/or curved head. Some inexpensive options are the G Slim Satin TouchBgee, and Beau. More high-end choices include the LELO Gigi 2, We-Vibe Rave, and LELO Mona 2. There are also some vibrating dildos and non-vibrating dildos that are ideal for G-spot play. Learn more about picking out the perfect G-spot toy in our guide.

KayaAnd how about the two-in-one toys? The Her Name is Rio kit comes with one motor and two silicone shapes, one for clitoral stimulation and one for insertion. Or, some folks find the idea of a dual or rabbit vibe especially appealing, as they offer simultaneous internal and external stimulation. The downside to these toys is that they are very anatomy-specific, and their abundant stimulation may feel overwhelming to beginners. The upside is that when a rabbit really works for you, it can become your go-to toy. One small and non-intimidating dual vibe is the Butterfly Bliss. Kaya is also a nice introductory rabbit. Get the in-depth low-down on rabbit vibes in our guide.

There’s just one final factor you should consider when choosing your first vibrator: aesthetics! Your sense of style will probably guide you anyway when you’re browsing our shop, but be sure to listen to it! You’ll be much more likely to use a toy that you find visually appealing.

Still feeling boggled? Come to our recurring class, The Joys of Toys!, in which we cover everything you need to know about delving into the big wide world of sex toys.

Check out their Droplet Necklace (secretly a pair of vibrating nipple stimulators!) and leather “bracelets” that morph into handcuffs. Incoqnito’s Leather Nipple Tassels don’t masquerade as anything else, but they are hot nipple adornments nonetheless!

Two new books are on our bookshelf this month: Curvy Girls: Erotica for Women, a collection starring voluptuous ladies, and When Sex Hurts: A Woman’s Guide to Banishing Sexual Pain, a really wonderful guide that explains the causes of sexual pain, with stories from women who have experienced it and tips for choosing the right doctor.

We’ve been waiting forever for Vixen Creations to come out with some more of their dual-density VixSkin toys in non-realistic colors, and that day has finally arrived! Their bestselling Mustang now comes in two eye-popping new colors: neon pink and Tie-Bright. We’re in love!

Vixen also came out with Colossus, which is similar to their Ride On penis extender but with a longer inner cavity to accommodate longer penises.

Still looking for the rabbit vibe of your dreams? Kaya might just be it! This silky silicone toy has 12 vibration modes and an ergonomic shape.

The totally swanky Duet is also here! Constructed with body-safe silicone tips and a nickel-free electroplated metal base, Duet is USB rechargeable (!), waterproof, and extremely quiet. Oh, and it has two motors!

Last but not least — have you ever tried in vain to prop yourself or your partner up during sex? Squishy pillows aren’t exactly awesome at that, which is why the Liberator Jaz Motion exists. This handy sex pillow is made of durable furniture grade polyurethane foam, so it has just enough give while still being supportive. The cover also unzips so you can toss it in the washing machine!

Don’t forget! We have a “New Arrivals” section on our site that you can check whenever you’re wondering what’s fresh. We sometimes announce new products on Facebook and Twitter throughout the month as well.

She Bop’s Picks: Vibrators $30 and under

Shopping on a budget can be rough, but when it comes to sex toys, you can rest assured that we’ve done all the background research for you. We only stock toys that we believe are worth the money, and our selection of inexpensive vibrators is carefully curated. For when you want to save money but still get something worthwhile, here are our picks for the best vibes $30 and under.

The Silver Bullet ($16) is an old stand-by that many swear by, and for good reason: the shiny, egg-shaped bullet is easy to hold and manipulate, making it awesome for clitoral stimulation. The classic pocket rocket is also a popular choice, and our pick is the Shibari Pocket Pleasure ($10), a single-speed toy with a nubby tip. If you want more options, the Revitalize Massage Kit ($22) comes with three silicone attachments.

We love the colorful and fun Pocket Toyfriends ($22). With four styles to choose from — NiceFoxyPosh, and Zany — there’s sure to be a shape that intrigues you. Each is made with silicone and ABS plastic and takes one AAA battery, and all of them come with a one-year warranty. Very discreet and very cute!

The three-speed Power Bullet ($8) is one of our most inexpensive options, and we keep a bowl of them near the register for folks who want to toss one in with their purchase. They’re hard to resist, with their vibrant colors and petite size. As an added bonus, the Power Bullet fits into the bases of some vibrating dildos, like those from Tantus and Happy Valley. If the Power Bullet is a bit small for you, perhaps the Bettie Page Buzzin’ Bullet ($30) would be more fitting. At 5″ long and 1″ in diameter, it’s neither too big nor too small for clitoral play. Adorned with a slick chrome finish, the 120mm Bullet has five vibration functions available via a simple push button.

If you’re drawn to bling, the Bodywand Mini Massager ($20) brings that in spades! Encrusted with rhinestones and available in four colors, the Bodywand Mini Massager is a tiny, wand-shaped vibe that doesn’t skimp on the power. It has multiple speeds, a flexible neck, and a compact frame that is perfect for tossing in a handbag.

When you’re on a budget, what’s better than two toys in one? The Blue Venus Vibe ($20) is two-sided hummer vibe that offers two very different sensations. One side of this bright blue toy features a small protrusion for pinpoint clitoral stimulation, while the other side has a gentle, more subtle scooped shape. It all depends on what you’re in the mood for!

If something insertable (or something that can be either inserted or used clitorally) is more what you’re after, the Slimline G ($23) is a great and extremely versatile choice. With its skinny body and bulbous, curved tip, it can act as an ergonomic clitoral vibe or a precise G-spot vibe, and does fabulously with either. For a more travel-friendly option, take a look at the Slimline G 7x Mini, which is shorter and thinner. The Temptress Tiger Vibe ($18), a seamless multi-speed vibe with jungle cat flair, also works well for insertion or clitoral stimulation. With its many speeds and 2 C batteries, it does not mess around!

Finally, what if you want to transform an existing vibrator into something completely different? Get the Rabbit Sleeve ($8)! Made of body-safe elastomer, this sleeve is compatible with the Shibari Pocket PleasureBcute PearlRainSilver BulletBodywand Mini Massager, and several other vibes in our shop. It’s a fun and simple way to amp up a vibe you already own.

New product round-up for August

We picked up three new dildos from Happy Valley this month: WildeFuze Tango, and Jet. Wilde is based on the design of Harmony, but a bit longer and thicker. The Fuze Tango is just like the double-ended Tango, only it’s made of shiny black silicone. Jet is a semi-realistic dildo with balls that comes in either blue or purple. What do these toys have in common? They’re all great for harness and partner play!

Our newest vibe is Zizo, a firm silicone G-spotter. Its sensual shape is smooth and comfortable, and its 12 vibration modes are both powerful and near-silent.

For your butt, we have the new Aneros Helix Syn. Based on the design of the super-popular Aneros Helix, the Syn is coated in silky silicone, but still retains the rigidity that makes the original such a superb prostate massager.

When you’re a young queer person, you need all the guidance you can get. That’s why we picked up Queer: The Ultimate Guide for LGBT Teens. This book discusses coming out, dating, and how to combat homophobia, along with a plethora of personal stories from the authors and lessons on queer history. If there’s a queer teen in your life, definitely pick this one up for them.

We mentioned in last month’s new product round-up that Aslan Leather does not forget about vegans, and that remains true with their slick Rubber Collar and Rubber Cuffs. Explore your kinky side with these sexy restraints featuring heavy welded rings and buckles.

Bonus! We now have a “New Arrivals” section on our site that you can check whenever you’re wondering what’s fresh. We sometimes announce new products on Facebook and Twitter throughout the month as well.

How to choose and enjoy a G-spot toy

Despite furious back-and-forth debates in the media, we know that the G-spot is not the elusive and impossible thing it is made out to be, nor is it something that only a few lucky folks have. Everyone with a vagina has a G-spot, it’s just that the G-spot is a very individualized thing — people tend to have their own particular ways of stimulating it.

Located 1-3 inches inside the vagina on the upper vaginal wall, the G-spot is an area of spongy erectile tissue that surrounds the urethral opening. Its very technical name is the urethral sponge, but its street name (which we think is way cooler) comes from the German gynecologist who first wrote about it — Ernest Grafenberg.

The urethral sponge is not on the surface of the vaginal wall itself, but directly behind it; therefore, it must be coaxed out to play. When a person becomes aroused, the G-spot’s dense tissue swells, becoming thicker and more easily felt. Most G-spots respond best to pressure rather than a light touch, which is why G-spot toys are often curved at the tip.

Sex toys are especially awesome for G-spot stimulation because they are longer and firmer than fingers, plus they’re more ergonomic (read: no more tired wrists)! But how do you choose between the many options out there, and how can you get the most out of the toy you pick? Read on!

Selecting the right toy

Above all, you want to choose something that will be comfortable to use. If you are new to G-spot stimulation, you may want a thinner toy or something inexpensive. The Bswish BgeeRebel Ticker, and G Slim Satin Touch are all $30 and under, and no more than 1 1/4″ in diameter. For higher budgets, the OhMiBod Lovelife CuddleVixen Mistress, and Fuze Velvet are also excellent for beginners.

A firm, unyielding material — such as glass, metal, wood, stone, or plastic — is always a good choice for G-spot stimulation, due to the amount of pressure the G-spot requires. Glass and stone dildos like the Simply Blown G-Glass, Laid D.2, and Standard Glass Dildo provide a flawlessly smooth sensation along with some extra weightiness. Wooden dildos like the Fling and Seduction are lighter, but deliciously rigid, with a unique texture. The stainless steel njoy Pure Wand and Fun Wand are the heaviest choice, ensuring that their weight contributes to the intensity of the stimulation. Some silicone toys, like the LELO Gigi 2 and We-Vibe Rave, are also quite firm.

Some folks like vibrations against their G-spot, feeling that vibrations help them pinpoint the area more easily. Others find vibrations distracting, or they just prefer to thrust with a non-vibrating toy. Vibration lovers should check out the LELO Mona 2, We-Vibe Rave, and Blush Nude Impressions #1, three great rechargeable options, or the less expensive battery-operated PicoBong Moka. On the other hand, non-vibrating toys like the LELO Ella, New York Toy Collective Shilo, and TruSkyn Tru Curve allow you to thrust away vibration-free. An in-between option would be the Pleasure Works Cadet, which comes with a mini bullet to add light vibration if desired.

A lot of folks associate an extreme curve with ideal G-spot toys, but that isn’t necessarily true. Even toys with a gentle curve, or toys with just a pronounced head, can stimulate the G-spot — it all depends on the way the toy is manipulated during use, and how sensitive a person is to G-spot stimulation. Many of Vixen’s dildos are formidable G-spot toys, especially if you’re into realistic dildos.

If you’re a fan of textured toys, you may find that you love the feeling of undulations stroking your G-spot as you thrust. For that, consider the Fun Factory Tiger G5 or Good Vibes Rippler.

Do you prefer your G-spot stimulation with a side of clitoral stimulation? There are a few dual stimulation toys with curved shafts, like the LELO Ina and PicoBong Kaya. There’s also the We-Vibe 4 Plus, a C-shaped vibe for those who prefer a rubbing or rocking motion rather than an in-and-out one. The We-Vibe 4 is slim enough that it can also be used during sex.

Experts agree that adding clitoral stimulation to the mix can enhance the G-spot sensations, but that doesn’t mean you have to have one toy doing both. There are plenty of mini vibes small enough to use alongside a G-spotting insertable.

A few tips for G-spot exploration

G-spot stimulation produces a very intense and unique sensation, and it can sometimes feel like the urge to pee. This makes sense, because putting pressure on the G-spot stimulates the urethra, sending a signal to your brain that you need to pee. Although this is just a false alarm, you may want to go to the bathroom first for extra reassurance.

Begin by turning yourself on with some erotica, porn, foreplay, or clitoral stimulation. The more aroused you are, the more sensitive your G-spot will become, so don’t rush through this part! You may even want to have an orgasm first to really get yourself revved up. Once you feel ready, drizzle some lube on your G-spot toy and insert it with the curve pointed toward your belly button. The G-spot is right behind the pubic bone, only 1-3 inches inside the vagina, so you shouldn’t have to go very far.

Now it’s time to experiment! Everyone’s G-spot responds to stimulation differently, so you should try all kinds of techniques: rocking, thrusting, general pressure, circles, a side-to-side windshield motion… or any combination thereof. Try your hand at a range of motions and different degrees of pressure. If your toy vibrates, play around with different modes, but also try the toy with vibrations turned off.

Of course, if something feels good, keep doing it! A G-spot orgasm could be in the cards, or you may experience ejaculation or squirting — a release of non-urine fluid from the urethra. This is totally normal, but you may want a towel underneath you for added protection!

Don’t worry if you don’t experience great pleasure at first. G-spot stimulation involves a lot of trial and error. Most importantly, relax and take your time.

Taking it to the next level

The Smart Girl's Guide to the G-SpotOf course, this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to exploring the G-spot. If you’re a G-spot connoisseur and able to handle some significant girth, there are some advanced G-spotting implements such as the Vixen Randynjoy Eleven, or Fun Factory Big Boss. If you like Hitachi-level vibrations, the Gee Whiz and Gee Whizzard attachments can give you that kind of power internally. There’s also a G-spotting, dual stimulation attachment for the Vibratex Mystic Wand.

For a super comprehensive G-spotting guide, we suggest Violet Blue’s The Smart Girl’s Guide to the G-Spot or Deborah Sundahl’s Female Ejaculation and the G-Spot.

New product round-up for July

We are pleased to introduce the Pocket Toyfriends! These new additions to the Toyfriends line are cute, small, and inexpensive. We love that they come in such a nice array of colors — to match anyone’s preference and style.

Speaking of colors, it’s always exciting to see Fun Factory’s new releases because their colors are always so vibrant, and their shapes so interesting! Their latest toys are the Boosty, Sonic, and New Wave. Boosty is an adorable, bubbly butt plug just a step up in size from their popular Bootie plug, but with the same exceptionally comfortable base. The Sonic and New Wave are unique double-ended dildos that curve and ripple to provide tons of stimulation to one person or two.

Three more dildos have sprouted up on our dildo table this month, all of them on the realistic spectrum. The silicone Vixen Creations Woody and Large Realistic Bent are pretty reminiscent of penises, except they come in purple and black! Meanwhile, the Tantus Adam O2 comes in black as well as a couple skin tones, and is made out of Tantus’ amazing dual-density silicone.

One of our very favorite kegel exercisers, the LELO Luna Beads system, now has a slightly-smaller sibling: the Luna Beads Mini! The Luna Beads Mini are for folks experienced in kegel exercising and/or those who have yet to go through childbirth. As always, they are great fun to wear around; movement makes the inner balls roll around and lightly “vibrate” internally.

Although Aslan Leather makes a ton of leather items (obviously!), they have not forgotten about vegans! Their aptly-named Simple Harness is made of soft nylon webbing, and with no metal parts, it’s fully machine washable! This extremely versatile harness comes in pink or black and can be worn as a two strap or in G-string style.

The hot new queer porn film of the moment is Billy Castro’s Naughty Squirters. Directed by and starring trans heartthrob Billy Castro, it follows him as he has his way with several sexy femmes proficient in the art of squirting.

Last month we picked up the Fenis stand-to-pee device, and now we have its more masculine counterpart, Mr. Fenis! Mr. Fenis has a realistic shape, comes in four different skin tones, and performs just as valiantly at directing the flow.

Oh, and remember the Sliquid Organics Massage Oil we mentioned last month? We’ve added the three scented versions — Mandarin Basil, Coconut Lime Verbena, and Tahitian Vanilla — in addition to the unscented. Come to the shop to give them a sniff!

New product round-up for June

We are super excited about the release of Spareparts Hardwear’s Tomboi, a true game-changer for comfortable and versatile harnesses. The Tomboi performs valiantly however you use it — as underwear, for packing, for pack and play, and of course, for straight-up awesome sex. Its signature elastic O-ring can hold a variety of sizes of dildo, plus it has two internal pockets to hold mini vibes. The Tomboi also comes in a Modal/Spandex version.

The Fenis, pictured here in a cute and colorful pile, is a cool new stand-to pee device that comes to us all the way from Nova Scotia, Canada. Made of 100% silicone, it is easily folded and unfolded, so it can travel with you everywhere.

Buck Angel has done it again with Sexing the Transman XXX, an educational but hardcore film that gives trans men a space to speak about and explore their sexuality in intimate jack-off scenes. It won “Most Tantalizing Trans Film” at the 2012 Feminist Porn Awards!

That adorable pipsqueak to the right is the Bodywand Mini Massager. It’s a mere 4″ long, but has a surprising amount of power! It comes in several colors, all adorned with little rhinestones at the base. And it’s obviously quite portable!

Have you been wanting to try Vixen Creations’s dual-density VixSkin silicone, but would rather have it in a bright color and less realistic shape? Then you’ll be happy to hear about Raquel, Vixen’s only non-realistic VixSkin dildo. Its plush, G-spotting head and shimmery pink color are fantastic.

Sometimes all you want is a simple massage without an overpoweringly scented massage oil, which is why we picked up Sliquid’s Organics Massage Oil in its unscented version. This oil is a blend of naturally occurring nut and seed oils, combined with certified organic botanicals. The scented options will arrive in the shop very soon as well!

On the book front, we’ve completed the Fifty Shades trilogy in our catalog by adding the final book, Fifty Shades Freed.

And lastly, check out the sassy and adorable Foulmouth greeting cards! Manufactured start to finish in artist Anna Diem’s living room in San Francisco, they feature colorful paintings and a glorious sense of humor. For example, one card features a painting of a house getting rained on with the phrase “I wanna be inside you” on the inside. We love it!

Jimmyjane and sophisticated sex toy design

Jimmyjane is one of the most recognizable names in luxury sex toys, and that certainly didn’t happen by accident. In a great article from The Atlantic, the author peels back the curtain on the Jimmyjane enterprise, using it as a springboard to muse about the influence that thoughtful sex toy technology and design can have on the way people view the role of sex toys in their lives.

The founder of Jimmyjane, Ethan Imboden, holds an electrical engineering degree and a master’s in industrial design. For a while, he designed consumer products such as cell phones and electric toothbrushes. But when a potential client asked him about designing a sex toy, Imboden took a fateful trip to the Adult Novelty Manufacturers Expo. It was ten years ago, and most sex toys were not exactly glamorous. He found himself bombarded with

. . . a gaudy display of “severed anatomy, goofy animals, and penis-pump flashing-lights kind of stuff,” Imboden recalled.

. . . Imboden was inspired. “As soon as I saw past the fact that in front of me happened to be two penises fused together at the base, I realized that I was looking at the only category of consumer product that had yet to be touched by design,” Imboden said. “It’s as if the only food that had been available was in the candy aisle, like Dum Dums and Twizzlers, where it’s really just about a marketing concept and a quick rush and very little emphasis on nourishment and real enjoyment. The category had been isolated by the taboo that surrounded it. I figured, I can transcend that.”

So Imboden worked his way into the scene, sparking conversations about sex toys at dinner parties, pitching his idea to investors, asking his mother’s opinion on his sex toy descriptions (“Ethan, you handled the anus beautifully,” she replied), sneaking a 24-carat gold-plated vibrator into the hands of Snoop Dogg, and convincing Sharper Image to put the Form 6 on its shelves.

Jimmyjane is an innovator. They were the first to use white packaging, despite resistance from retailers who thought customers would be put off by it. They were the first to invent candles with a melting point that matched body temperature. And they are changing the way people see sex toys, along with other luxury brands like LELO and Je Joue.

The article also includes an interlude on the history of the vibrator, and some interesting quotes from people in the biz about sex toys becoming more mainstream. It’s a fantastic read, so go check it out!
