Beyond Monogamy

Thursday, May 4th — 7:30 p.m. — $20

A growing number of people are exploring alternatives to monogamy, through swinging, polyamory, and other types of open relationships. If you or someone you know are one of those people, this might be the workshop for you!

Whether you are curious about opening up, already enjoying polyamory and wanting to do it even better, or facing obstacles in your non-monogamous relationship, AJ will help walk you through the challenges and benefits of ethical non-monogamy. She will discuss different styles of open relationships, talk about how to deal with common issues such as jealousy, resentment, time management, miscommunication, and New Relationship Energy (NRE), and will offer tips on dating/meeting new people, navigating different relationship structures and hierarchies, and coming out poly.

In this interactive workshop, AJ will guide participants through exercises that help them negotiate agreements/boundaries, design their own ideal open relationships, and practice nonviolent communication for deeper, more fulfilling connections. There will also be the option to hear about real-life triumphs and tribulations of other non-mono people in addition to learning how to find and build community. This is a 2-hour class.

AJ (aka Amory Jane) is one of She Bop’s in-house sex educators. She graduated with a master’s degree from Lewis & Clark College, where she studied Sex Therapy and Marriage, Couple, & Family Counseling. She has facilitated multiple discussion groups and taught dozens of sex education workshops around Portland and the Midwest. She also moonlights as a relationship coach, working with polyamorous individuals and couples in open relationships. AJ is an active member of the Portland poly community.

Allison Moon is author of the award-winning, critically-acclaimed sex ed book Girl Sex 101, the Tales of the Pack series of novels about lesbian werewolves, and the sexual memoir, Bad Dyke. As a sex educator, Allison has presented her workshops to thousands of people around the US and Canada.

Reid Mihalko helps adults and college students create more self-esteem, self-confidence and greater health in their relationships and sex lives using an inspiring mixture of humor, keen insight, and comprehensive sexual health information. He frequently speaks at colleges and universities, and regularly appears in the media sharing his views on consent, dating, and shame-free sexuality.

Open Relationships 101 with Tristan Taormino

There are few established scripts or visible role models for open relationships, so people in them can struggle without support and guidance. In this interactive workshop, Tristan Taormino (relationship expert and author of Opening Up) will give practical advice on how to craft responsible, fulfilling non-monogamous relationships.

Tristan will explore common myths, real-life benefits and challenges, and how to decide if an open relationship is right for you. She will share some of the most common styles of open relationships — from partnered non-monogamy to solo polyamory — and discuss how to customize them to meet your individual needs and wants. Through creative exercises, you’ll learn to articulate what you want, identify and negotiate limits and boundaries, communicate with your partner(s) in productive ways, and create relationships that work for you.

Tristan Taormino is an award-winning writer, editor, sex educator, speaker, feminist pornographer, and the host of Sex Out Loud, a weekly radio show/podcast. She is the editor of 25 anthologies and author of eight books, including Opening Up: A Guide to Creating and Sustaining Open RelationshipsThe Secrets of Great G-Spot Orgasms and Female Ejaculation and The Ultimate Guide to Kink. She lectures at top colleges and universities and teaches sex and relationship workshops around the world. She is the founder of Sex Educator Boot Camp, a professional training program for sex educators, and she provides business consulting and coaching to individuals and organizations.
