Dissecting the blackboards in porn

What is the internet for, if not uber-specific blogs such as Blackboards in Porn? This deliciously safe-for-work blog takes a photo of a blackboard in a porn scene, along with fully-clothed performers, and analyzes the information for accuracy, issuing a grade from 1-10. Subjects are varied: chemistry, math, music, English, and history have all been covered thus far. Impressive!

It’s hard to choose a favorite, really, because each analysis is pretty hilarious. But I did really enjoy this one:

The title Imperial Russia 1609-1752 is something of a misnomer. The Russian Empire wasn’t founded until 1721 — before that date it was the Tsardom of Russia. In fact, the date range chosen for module 3271 does seem somewhat arbitrary. The main study question is rather awkwardly posed, using a mixture of tenses, but is open enough to stretch the more able students.

Handwriting is rather sloppy — all caps, sometimes at a rather wild angle, and with one map label illegible. The student pictured has been lucky to find Professor Stefano in, as his office hours are somewhat idiosyncratic. But this could be a result of education cutbacks, or flexitime due to his personal circumstances, so will not affect the overall score. (In fact, his work-life balance may be under threat as he feels the need to specify that he does not work at weekends.)

Overall: a very good effort – 7/10.

I learn something new each time this blog is updated, so I hope it will be around for a long time! The blog author is looking for user submissions, so if you have a picture of a blackboard in porn (SFW or otherwise), email blackboardsinporn AT googlemail.com.

She Bop’s Picks: Halloween

Halloween is almost upon us! Here are our picks for celebrating this night of frights.

Our sex toys themselves are not scary (okay, maybe scary good), but they do come in festive colors! Fun orange toys include Ina and Pop Vibe. Black is a much more common sex toy color, but the Ella, Captain, Harmony, Tenga Flip Hole, Zing, Tor, Tristan, and Leo all wear it quite well!

Want to curl up with a spooky book? Check out these hot, themed erotica books: Red Velvet and Absinthe: Paranormal Erotic Romance, Girls Who Bite: Lesbian Vampire Erotica, and Daughters of Darkness: Lesbian Vampire Stories.

If a sexy movie sounds more your style, you might enjoy the lusty The Devil in Miss Jones or the gothic Ladies of the Night: Les Vampyres.

Are you dressing up this year? We have some custom-made costume aprons from Naughty Autie available, as well as several styles of pasties. Add some authority to your outfit (or your bedroom) with the Kitty Crop or Skull Crop.

And let’s not forget the treats! We have candy G-strings, nipple tassels, love rings, cuffs, necklaces, posing pouches, and even some gummy boobs to give you a sugar rush.

Happy Halloween!

HUMP! 2011 submission deadline this Friday

It’s my favorite time of year: the time of apple cider, pumpkin pie, and amazing amateur porn! The Pacific Northwest’s only locally-produced adult film festival, HUMP!, is back for its seventh year, and we’re sponsoring again. With a cute tagline of “The film festival that allows you to be a porn star for a weekend — not for life,” HUMP! promises the usual hotness and hilarity of years past.

This is the final week to submit films for consideration at HUMP! 2011. The deadline is this Friday.

The Mercury and the HUMP! 2011 jury invite local filmmakers, actors, kinksters, exhibitionists, and notorious sex-havers to get to work on their films for HUMP! 2011. The HUMP! jury is composed of local sex experts (ahem), sex-positive film critics, and sex-obsessed porn fans. The HUMP! jury looks for hotness, humor, and originality. Films do not have to be slick or professionally produced. They do have to be hot or funny or hot and funny.

Films selected for HUMP! are screened over two weekends in Seattle and Portland. The Mercury returns or destroys all copies of the films after the festival. Films are not released on the internet, and all screenings are monitored to prevent bootleg copies of HUMP! films from being made.

. . . Entries can be erotica, hardcore, softcore, live-action, BDSM, animation, gay, straight, bi — whatever turns your crank!

To sweeten the deal, the prize packages have been bumped up from last year! The runners-up in the Humor, Kink, and Sex categories will get $500 this year, and the “Best in Show” grand prize is now $4,000! Winners, as always, will be determined by audience vote.

To submit to HUMP!, drop off your entry at the Mercury offices by 5:00 p.m. this Friday, October 7th.

HUMP! will be taking place at Cinema 21, November 17-19. Tickets go on sale this Thursday.

Porn myths, debunked

There sure is a lot to discuss when it comes to porn, and no shortage of posts on the internet about it. However, when I came across a porn myth series by Dr. Brooke Magnanti, a forensic scientist, statistician, and former sex worker, I knew it was something special.

The five-part series of posts looks at various questions that many folks have when it comes to porn, examining the research that has been done, both credible and questionable. Best of all, there are links to many of the studies/papers, so you can read them in full and form your own opinion on the research. Here are the five posts.

If nothing else, Magnanti’s posts confirm that sweeping generalizations about porn are not useful. There are so many varieties of porn out there, and the industry cannot be pinned down easily. At She Bop we’re discerning with our porn selection for this very reason.

In a similar vein, I found a post by Dr. Marty Klein (sex therapist and author) about his experience at a porn shoot. The post — Deep in the Valley: Going to a Porn Shoot — makes a very poignant point about watching porn.

Sooner or later, watching the same people having sex is repetitive and boring — unless, of course, you’re adding to it via fantasy, imagination, arousal, and voyeurism. I didn’t do much of that, because I was there working (yeah, I know — nice gig). So yes, watching the shoot did reduce the sex (along with the filming itself) to a technical craft. She used her left hand when the camera needed it, even though she’s right-handed. He stopped right in the middle of licking her when some sweat dripped into a bowl of fruit.

Some people condemn how watching porn at home supposedly does the same thing — it reduces sex to “mechanics.” But the critical difference between watching a film being made and watching it at home is what the consumer brings to the experience. And that transforms the “mechanics” into something stimulating . . .

What a consumer brings to a porn film is imagination, privacy, a little time, maybe lube or a toy. And that gives the images meaning — erotic meaning. When anti-porn crusaders take the same film and add fear, anger, and a sense of helplessness, they also give the images meaning — but distinctly un-sexy ones (such as “exploitation” and “immorality”). So:

Porn + nothing = neutral meaning
Porn + privacy + time + imagination = positive meaning
Porn + fear, loneliness + anger = negative meaning

I’d never thought of it this way, but it makes so much sense. Porn is given meaning by the viewer. Makes you feel powerful, doesn’t it?

New product round-up for July

Here are the products we added to our catalog in the month of July! First up: the Slimline G, an inexpensive plastic vibe designed for superb G-spot stimulation. This toy would make a great introduction to G-spot exploration.

That snazzy box you see is a pack of Sir Richard’s condoms. Aside from having really hip packaging, Sir Richard’s believes that safe sex is a human right. So, for every Sir Richard’s condom you buy, they will donate one condom to a country in need. Pretty neat, eh?

Then there’s Furverts, an amusing (and interactive: it has a fuzzy peek-a-boo cover!) photographic look at the furry subculture. We also added three other books: The Ultimate Guide to Orgasm for Women, Woman Cancer Sex, and Man Cancer Sex.

Last but not least: porn! We now stock these hot lesbian movies: Take Her Down! Lesbian Erotic Oil Wrestling Party and a two-pack of Afterschool Special and Turn Me Up Over and On. And finally, to bulk up our Classic/Vintage DVD category, we’ve added one DVD of softcore burlesque nudes from the ’40s and ’50s, and one DVD of softcore nudes from the ’50s and ’60s.

Help fund a documentary about Buck Angel

We’re huge fans of transgender activist, educator, and porn performer Buck Angel. We welcomed Buck into our community in March of last year for a DVD signing, and we had a blast! We also proudly carry quite a few of his revolutionary movies: V for Vagina, Buckback Mountain, The Buck Stops Here, and Even More Bang for Your Buck.

For the past 6 years, a documentary film crew has followed Buck and documented his extraordinary life and work. The footage is wrapped up, but the crew needs to hire a talented editor in order to hopefully submit the film to festivals in the fall — so they created a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of gathering donations. They have already reached their original goal of $6,000 in donations, but would ideally love to have $9,000.

This exciting documentary, entitled Mr. Angel, explores important issues of gender identity, body image, sexuality, health, and survival. Here’s a portion of the description of the project, and you can view a trailer and more info on the campaign page (trailer begins at about 1:50).

‘Mr. Angel’ chronicles the extraordinary life of transgender advocate, educator and porn pioneer, Buck Angel. His in-your-face style of activism has audiences challenged and outraged by his insistence that he is simply “a man who happens to have a vagina.” Buck has spent a lifetime facing relentless opposition and yet lives his truth with no apology. This feature-length documentary explores the source of his unwavering message of self acceptance and his drive to publicly confront the male/female binary head on. This is a story of amazing perseverance, empowerment, and an unlikely hero.

For the past 6 years, we’ve followed Buck struggling to create a new genre in the adult industry and working as an advocate and educator who is passionate about health, body image, and basic human rights. We’ve also documented his relationship with his wife, Elayne, and their life together with their seven dogs in the Yucatan. From home, the film follows the couple on trips to Berlin’s Porn Festival, to Philly to conduct body image workshops, to Yale University for a safe sex presentation, and to the Porn Oscars in Las Vegas.

There are all kinds of goodies available as rewards for different donation levels; pledge $30 or more and you’ll receive a digital download of the film when it’s finished! The final day for donations is July 10.

New product round-up for April

We recently added a truckload of new items to our catalog, and we want to tell you all about them!

First, the vibrating delights: we’re now stocking the much-anticipated Jimmyjane Form 4. This vibrator is bulbous, rechargeable, powerful, and waterproof — awesome!

We have several new cock rings: a leather one and even a stainless steel ring. We’re also excited about the new Tenga Flip Air masturbation sleeve, an updated version of the uber-popular Tenga Flip Hole.

Remember how we promised to stock even more of the movies nominated for Feminist Porn Awards this year? Well, we got ’em! Feast your eyes on the feminist-approved Billy Castro Does the MissionRoulette Toronto, and My Own Master. We are also now stocking Matinee and Tristan Taormino’s Rough Sex 3: Adrianna’s Dangerous Mind.

We’ve added a ton of books to our catalog! We got some exciting parenting books: Sex and Sensibility and Always My Child. We’re also plumping up our Gender/Politics book section with some amazing and important books: Kate Bornstein’s Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation, Helen Boyd’s My Husband Betty, and S. Bear Bergman’s Butch is a Noun.

Oh, and how could I forget — Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex, which is seriously hilarious.

Believe it or not, that’s not even everything we’ve added in the past month, but I’ll spare you an even longer link barrage! Drop by the shop and ask us what’s new, or use the filter in our online store to sort items from “newest to oldest.”

Nominees for the 2011 Feminist Porn Awards

We love the Feminist Porn Awards! Since 2006, they have been honoring and celebrating woman-positive porn. This year’s awards show and other festivities will be held April 13-15 in Toronto. The nominees for this year (of which there are 50+!) were recently announced. Any film chosen for the awards must meet certain standards: either that a woman was involved in the production of the film, that the film depicts “genuine pleasure and consent,” and/or that the film “expands the boundaries of sexual representation on film.” The Feminist Porn Awards (FPAs) are known for their awesome nomination categories, such as “Most Deliciously Diverse Cast” and “Hottest Trans Scene/Film.”

Here are four films nominated this year that we carry at She Bop! We plan to pick up more titles that were nominated in the coming months.

Tristan Taormino’s Expert Guide to Female Orgasms. Tristan Taormino is the queen of making education hot. In this film, she examines what it takes to get a woman off, then shows the techniques in action. Taormino’s other educational titles, such as Tristan Taormino’s Expert Guide to Oral Sex: Cunnilingus/Fellatio and Tristan Taormino’s Expert Guide to Anal Pleasure for Men, have also won FPAs in the past.

Life Love Lust. It’s no wonder this film by Erika Lust was nominated — her previous film, Five Hot Stories For Her, won “Movie of the Year” at the FPAs in 2008. Lust’s distinct filmmaking style focuses on nuance, romance, and authentic sex.

Crash Pad Series Volume 6. This is the sixth installment in a historic queer porn series by director Shine Louise Houston (named “The Visionary” at the 2010 FPAs). As always, this film features a vast array of queer-identified performers having the time of their lives together. Check out all the other movies in the Crash Pad series — many of which have won FPAs.

Rough Sex 2. This movie is why Tristan Taormino was named “The Trailblazer” at the 2010 FPAs. Her Rough Sex series takes female porn performers, asks them about their rough sex fantasies, and brings those fantasies to life. It’s a wonderful marriage of feminism and BDSM.

We also proudly stock movies that have won FPAs in the past, such as Caribbean Heat, Xana and Dax, The Wild SearchChampion (“Movie of the Year” in 2009), and Dangerous Curves.

Thank you, Feminist Porn Awards, for reminding the world that feminist porn not only exists — it deserves to be applauded.
