10% Tuesdays in April for Portland Women’s Crisis Line

Each Tuesday this April, 10% of our sales at She Bop will go to the Portland Women’s Crisis Line (PWCL). PWCL is a hugely important organization that offers 24/7 support to survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. They offer services such as safety planning, peer support, crisis intervention, needs assessments, and referrals to community resources. They have specialized programs for sexual assault and sex workers. PWCL is an invaluable asset to our community, and we are honored to be able to give back to them for the tireless work that they do.

April is also Sexual Assault Awareness Month. According to RAINN, someone in the U.S. is sexually assaulted every 2 minutes. This unfortunate statistic is a reality for 1 out of every 6 American women. Here are a few resources for thinking about and combating sexual assault.

We also carry the book Healing Sex and its DVD counterpart, which are meant to help survivors of sexual trauma reclaim their sex lives.

10% Tuesdays in January for In Other Words

In Other Words

Throughout the month of January, 10% of our proceeds made on Tuesdays will be donated to In Other Words, a non-profit, volunteer-run, feminist community center in NE Portland. Their mission is to support, enrich, and empower the feminist community through literature, art, and educational and cultural events.

In Other Words’ bookstore includes books on feminism, queer and transgender studies, sexuality, and activism/politics, as well as alternative children’s books that are not easily found at other bookstores. Their resource center offers information on topics such as health and wellness, therapy and counseling, sexual and reproductive help, transgender issues, LGBTQ support and advocacy, birth and parenting, education, housing, activism and social change, and places to contact in crisis situations.

In Other Words also supports local artists, craftspeople, musicians, performers, and writers by providing a venue for events and a space for selling art. They are one of the few spaces in Portland where artists and musicians can hold events for free and where people can attend all-ages events for low, sliding scale costs.

Most recently, In Other Words has created a free lending library, which enables everyone to find radical books in a space that is accessible to all economic demographics. Go sign up for a library card today, and come visit us on any Tuesday in January to support In Other Words!

In Other Words can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.

10% Tuesdays in October for Bradley Angle

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and She Bop will be donating 10% of all in-store sales on Tuesdays this month to Bradley Angle, an organization whose mission is to offer survivors of domestic and sexual violence options for safety, empowerment, healing and hope, while collaborating with local communities to create social change.

In 1975, Bradley Angle became the first domestic violence shelter on the West Coast (and only the 4th in the United States). Over the years, their services have expanded to include a 24-hour crisis line, transitional housing, support groups, community-based advocacy, and three programs unique to Oregon: culturally specific programming for African and African-American survivors, an economic empowerment program called Making Cent$, and support for LGBTQ survivors.

Visit us on any Tuesday in October to help out this vital organization. Bradley Angle can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.

10% Tuesdays in August for Bitch Media

10% Tuesdays are back! Throughout the month of August, 10% of our sales on Tuesdays will go to Bitch Media.

Currently, the people at Bitch are looking for more support to continue publishing their print magazine. They are hoping for 1,500 subscriptions ordered by August 8th. On their blog, they explain why the printed product is important:

. . . as people who care about providing a feminist response to pop culture (that’s you! and me too!), we want to reach out to as many people in as many ways as possible. Lots of people encounter Bitch Media through the magazine — in fact, maybe that’s how you discovered us. We want to keep that print train rolling and we want you to help. (Also, have you seen the print magazine? It’s gorgeous and super interesting and will make you look smart if you read it in public.)

So this is where the real talk comes in. Because I’m willing to bet that many of you reading this right now, online, do not subscribe to the magazine. We’d like to change that . . . If you want to Keep Bitch in Print, if you want to support the organization that brings you all the feminist response to pop culture that’s fit to print — online and off — subscribe, renew, or become a sustainer now.

We wholeheartedly agree with the need for feminist media, especially Bitch, which has been in print since 1996. Drop by the shop on any Tuesday in August to support this great organization.

10% Tuesdays in June for the Q Center

On each Tuesday in June, 10% of our sales will go to the Q Center, the wonderful LGBTQ community center just around the corner from us in North Portland. The Q Center is an absolute gem of an organization; here’s their description of what they do:

Q Center is a 501c3 non-profit organization with a mission to increase the visibility of and foster connection within metropolitan Portland’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Questioning (LGBTQ) community. The center builds public awareness and support, and celebrates LGBTQ diversity through art, culture, and collaborative community programming.

There are dozens of events and groups that meet here, some focused on specific topics (like coming out or gender identity) and others aimed at fun social interactions (like sing-along piano cabarets or craft nights). Entry to most of these is sliding-scale and run by dedicated volunteers, keeping Q Center truly community-driven and accessible.

In addition to our programmatic offerings, our 5,000 sq/ft facility is also a safe and friendly place to spend an afternoon. With our monthly art exhibits, extensive library collection, Resource Wall, and free WiFi access, there’s always something to see and learn here at Q Center.

Come visit us and find a new toy on any Tuesday in June, and 10% of your purchase will go to the Q Center!

Bonus: give the Q Center some social media love by following them on Facebook and Twitter! Also check out some video interviews with the people who make the Q Center tick on YouTube.
