We’re on Oh Joy Sex Toy — and voted the #1 sex toy shop in Portland!

When we invited Portland cartoonist and Oh Joy Sex Toy creator Erika Moen to attended two of our most popular classes, Full-Bodied Fellatio and Beyond Monogamy, we knew the resulting comic would be awesome. But nothing could have prepared us for just how awesome.

She Bop on Oh Joy Sex Toy!

Not only did Erika draw an excellent depiction of our class instructors AJ and M. Makael Newby, she meticulously illustrated the shop itself… and had so many nice things to say about her experience at each class!

AJ was fun and engaging, packing a TON of information into two hours. My favorite bit was the Jealousy Jellyfish she used to breakdown the different components of the ol’ Green Eyed Monster.

The diversity of the attendees surprised me! I guess I was expecting middle-aged, heterosexual, cisgender, married couples who’ve been together a couple decades and are now interested in swinging. But the ages and genders and sexual orientations of the people who showed up was quite a mix — and so were their reasons for attending!

. . . Despite the vast difference in subject matter and presentation format between these two classes, they both managed to be very high energy. She Bop felt very welcoming, friendly, and like a safe place to get feedback on super intimate questions.

We are so glad Erika enjoyed the classes and took the time to immortalize them in digital comic form! We run these two classes on a pretty regular schedule, so be sure to keep an eye on our events page or sign up for our monthly email newsletter to snag a spot in the next one.

She Bop in the Mercury's PDX Approved guide 2014In other news, we were voted the #1 sex toy shop in Portland in the Mercury‘s PDX Approved guide! This is our fourth year being included. We remember back in 2011 when the category was called simply “porn shop.” In 2012, it became “porn / sex toy shop” and the Mercury published a really cool write-up about us. Each year, we are honored!

A resounding THANK YOU to everyone who voted for us in the Mercury‘s ballot. We appreciate your support! And congratulations to our fellow shops Fantasy and Spartacus — it’s great to have so many fun places to shop in Portland!

Thanks for voting She Bop the #1 sex toy shop in PDX!

The Portland Mercury‘s annual PDX Approved guide has hit the streets, and we were named the #1 porn / sex toy shop in the city for the second year in a row!

We’ve been honored to be included in this guide for the past three years. In 2011, the category was called simply “porn shop.” Last year, it became “porn / sex toy shop” and the Mercury published a sweet write-up about us.

This year, the PDX Approved guide is a separate little booklet that can be found in the middle of this week’s Mercury. Get it while you can!

A resounding THANK YOU to everyone who chose us in the Mercury‘s ballot. And congratulations to our fellow shops Fantasy, Spartacus, and Taboo — it’s great to have so many fun places to shop in Portland!

She Bop and staff in the news!

Our corner sign, photo by the Redhead Bedhead! We have some fun snippets of news to share with everyone! We’ve been mentioned on a couple websites recently, and our staff has been busy publishing some awesome (and informative!) articles that we think you should check out.

At the end of December, a blogger named the Redhead Bedhead visited us and wrote a little something about her experience. We don’t allow photos to be taken inside the shop to protect customer privacy, but the Redhead Bedhead let us know she was coming and we arranged to have her visit one morning before we opened to snap a few shots and chat with us. Great fun!

Read her post to see some photos of the shop and find out which sex toys Evy would bring to a deserted island (and which toy our whole staff agrees is amazing), plus what music we like to play in the shop. The Redhead Bedhead even mentioned us in two other recent posts: People That Made My 2012 and Why Good Sex Shops Matter (we agree!).

what-a-riotMeanwhile, our sales associate and educator Wyatt Riot writes a column for PQ Monthly called “What a Riot!” that is always a good read. His latest column is about the Portland kink scene. He discusses common kink terminology and PDX kink resources such as meetings, panel discussions, and play parties (like the one he co-organizes, Dirty Playground).

Broadsheet360 (the same site where a contributor wrote about her experience at one of our burlesque classes) published an article about holiday gift-giving in December that mentions us and our community work during our 10% Tuesday promotions. Broadsheet360 writes:

She Bop is about stuffing stockings all year round and they have six non-profits that they support throughout the year with their 10% Tuesday fundraisers. Those non-profits are: Bitch Media, providing a feminist response to pop culture; Bradley Angle, assisting survivors of domestic violence; In Other Words, a feminist community center; Portland Women’s Crisis Line, for survivors of domestic and sexual violence; TransActive, serving the diverse needs of transgender and gender nonconforming children, youth, their families and allies; and the Q Center, Portland’s LGBTQ Community Center.

As it happens, we’re in the midst of our January fundraiser for In Other Words right now! Get in on that if you want to support the efforts of Portland’s premiere feminist bookstore and community center.

And to top things off, our former sales associate and educator, Yana, who moved back east last February, is rocking it out with her sex-positive writing lately! In a recent article for Curve magazine about toys for trans* folks, she graciously mentioned us as a trans-friendly shop in Portland.

The article also includes a nod to many products we carry, such as Silky (A.K.A Mr. Bendy), Goodfella (and other VixSkin dildos), Tomboi, Vibrating Pleasure Pump, 3 Cylinder Pump System, Sliquid Stimulating O Gel, and trans* literature and media such as Take Me There, Couch Surfers, Roulette, and Original Plumbing.

Yana also reviews several different lubes, including Sliquid Organics Natural, Blossom Organics Natural, Good Clean Love Almost Naked, and Yes (Almost Naked and Yes are her faves).

Thanks again to the Redhead Bedhead and Broadsheet360 for featuring us on your sites! And Yana and Wyatt, you guys are awesome and we always love reading what you have to say.

She Bop voted #1 sex toy shop in the Mercury

We were so ecstatic to learn that we were voted the #1 sex toy shop in Portland in the Portland Mercury‘s PDX Approved guide! The Mercury even published a really awesome write-up about us. Check it out:

Among our other attributes, Portland people are overwhelmingly sex positive. So we expect a bit more when shopping for toys and paraphernalia designed to get our rocks off. Surely that’s why you voted She Bop as “Your Favorite Sex Toy Shop” — because not only do they carry all manner of erotic vibrating toys for the “she,” they also have plenty of fun in store for the “he” or the “in between”! She Bop’s founders and owners, Evy Cowan and Jeneen Doumitt, started their venture in 2009 and quickly stumbled onto the secret for keeping their customers happy (sexually and otherwise). “Our customers really appreciate the experience they get when they come into our shop,” says Cowan. “We talk about sex toys and lube the way any specialty boutique talks about their products. We don’t get all sexy-sexy with people. We just give them the information and help them make educated decisions. However, you can’t come into She Bop and not have fun. It just isn’t possible!” The result is a very different type of sex shop that… well… doesn’t feel dirty at all. She Bop’s products are carefully curated by their staff, thereby providing the most scientifically advanced, non-toxic, and body-safe toys on the market — plus tons of advice and experience to back them up. Pair this with rows of slippery-slidey lubricants, DVDs, fun instructional books, and monthly events to spice up even the dreariest love life, and it’s little surprise that She Bop was voted the friendliest, most knowledgeable, and sex-positive shop in town.

Huge huge huge THANK YOU to everyone who wrote our name on the Mercury‘s ballot. We appreciate you so much and we are truly honored!

Portland Queer Girl City Guide

Have you seen Autostraddle’s Queer Girl City Guide to Portland? This in-depth guide lists all kinds of queer-friendly restaurants, bars, coffee shops, strip clubs, hair salons, and tattoo shops in PDX, as well as events — such as queer dance nights, Portland Pride, and a plethora of other rad LGBTQ functions.

There’s a lot of love for our home, North Portland, in this guide! Under “Neighborhoods of Interest,” NoPo is listed as a “Gayborhood” (amazing!). Many businesses in our area are listed, including Bishop’s (which just moved in down the street from us), Mississippi Studios / Bar Bar, The Florida Room, Sloan’s TavernCup and Saucer, and Icon Tattoo. We were excited to see She Bop listed under “Etc.” as Portland’s local, female-owned sex toy shop. Here’s what they have to say about us:

[She Bop offers] a positive environment, helpful staff and a range of high quality sex toys. The shop also offers classes and workshops such as The Joys of Toys! & Exploring Burlesque: Striptease Salon.

The guide also gives a run-down of queer-friendly Portland colleges, sports teams, performing arts groups, outdoor adventure spots, and several non-profits we support, such as Bitch Media, In Other Words, and the Q Center.

Near the end of the guide, there’s an analysis of the diversity, safety, cost of living, and overall queer-friendliness of Portland, concluding that Portland is “very queer-friendly” and “very body positive, sex positive and accepting of gender variant identities.”

Within the city limits, queers are seen everywhere and go relatively unnoticed by the general population. Walking around town, you’ll see many different business with the HRC equality sticker hanging on a window, or a rainbow flag. Portland makes us queers feel very welcomed.

The overall atmosphere of the city is SUPER friendly. When walking around on a sunny day, expect smiles and nods from strangers and friendly waves. People in Portland are very chill, accepting, and friendly overall.

Autostraddle has published many other Queer Girl City Guides, including one for Seattle and one for Spokane. Really cool resources — check them out!
